What is EI?
Emotions are involved in everything we do. Every action. Every decision. Every moral judgement. Emotionally intelligent people recognise this and use their thinking to manage their emotions rather than being managed by them.
Everything we do involves the experimental triangle of thoughts, emotions and actions. In other words, whatever the situation, we are always thinking, feeling and doing and these 3 things are always connected.
This is completely consistent with how our brains work. With the advent of techniques of brain imaging, we are now learning how our brain communicates with itself and the rest of our body. The limbic system of our midbrain (our emotional brain) is responsible for managing our values, beliefs and attitudes and the emotions they trigger. Every second, this part of our brain is sending neuronal impulses to our pre-frontal cortex, the part of our brain responsible for logical thinking.
